Montane Forests
The eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, are referred to as The Front Range. Several distinct habitats are home to a number of specialty birds. Our tour will include the foothill shrublands, at about 6,000 feet, where low-growing mountain mahogany, antelope bitterbrush, currants and sumac are home to MacGillivray’s Warbler, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Lazuli Bunting, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay, Black-headed Grosbeak. Around 7,500 feet the montane forest begins, dominated by ancient ponderosa pines with stands of Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce and quaking aspen. Here we’ll seek out Steller’s Jays, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Pygmy Nuthatches, Red-naped and Williamson’s Sapsuckers, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Hammond’s and Dusky Flycatchers, Western Tanager and Plumbeous Vireo.
